About our club

Background

The Flight Refuelling Amateur Radio Society - FRARS - was founded in 1982 by employees of Flight Refuelling (Now Cobham plc).
The club has a variety of members with wide-ranging interests. There are those who like to take part in contests on every band from DC to light, and others who just enjoy the company of like-minded people that can be found at the club.

MEETINGS
We meet every Wednesday and Sunday evening.
Wednesdays begin with a short announcement of what has been happening within the club and any current events. The shacks are usually open during the evening for operating activity and advice. Morse tuition can be arranged.

Sundays can be either social evenings, lecture or activity nights. See our website for the programme of events.
Many members just come to chat and catch up on news, often in the comfort of the Cobham social club bar area, just across the field from FRARS HQ.

Our club facilities can be made available every club night for members to use.

Anyone who is interested in becoming a member or who just wants to know "Hey! What's this all about?" is more than welcome on either of the club nights where they will receive a warm welcome.

TRAINING
We hold exam courses for all, from novice (foundation) to advanced licence categories, and welcome course enquiries - see our address below.

ACTIVITIES
We take part in both fixed and field day contests and have won awards for competitions from HF through to microwaves.
Leading-edge experimentation and activity at the club includes microwave operation up to 24 GHz, SSTV and moon-bounce EME (earth-moon-earth)using advanced modes and computer controlled equipment.

HAMFEST
We arrange and run a very popular Hamfest rally in August each year. This is a highlight of the year for FRARS when we greet friends old and new, here at Merley.

Meeting times

Wednesdays and Sundays from 19:30. At the end of the meeting members often re-group in the bar of the sports and social club.
