About our club

Background

Gloucester Amateur radio and Electronics Society (GARES) can justly claim to be one of the oldest societies in Gloucester.

It was formed in 1926, under the name "Gloucester Wireless Club," by the amalgamation of the Wireless Society of Gloucester and the Glevum Radio and Scientific Society. These societies had their origins before World War I, were in abeyance during the war, and were reformed in 1919.

The club meets on Monday evenings at 7.30pm, in the Science Laboratory at Churchdown School on the outskirts of Gloucester. A formal meeting is held at least once a month, based on a talk or demonstration, normally about amateur radio or related topics. Informal meetings, on other evenings, allow members to focus on activities of their own choice with constructional projects proving to be the most popular. We also run a series of pedestrian DF contests in the school grounds.

The club is open to all who have an interest in Electronics or Radio and our programme of activities is compiled so that a wide range of topics and abilities are provided for.

For further details and a full list of our meetings, please see our own web site at www.g4aym.org.uk Alternatively, please email us at gares-AT-g4aym-DOT-org-DOT-uk or just come along to one of our meetings.
