About our club

Background

The "Special Event" station using the call GB2RA first opened in the RA Firepower Museum in 2003 with a large display of vintage military radio. Since then we have changed the format in line with changing museum presentations.
For various technical reasons using Amplitude Modulated (AM) low power former military transmitters is rarely practical in the current environment, although we do try and a range of vintage receivers is usually available for visitors to use.
Amateur operation now more usually uses SSB alongside older non military radio to enable us to speak with operators around the world. SSB is now the normal means of voice communication alongside Morse (CW)
We encourage operation of our radios by suitably qualified and licenced operators. The general public may also operate under our careful supervision.
Age is not a problem, either young or old.

Meeting times

The club does not meet regularly off site but does associate with The Cray Valley Radio Club (CVRS) who can be consulted through their web site: www.cvrs.org
If you would like to know how to become a qualified radio operator please contact us. Morse is no longer a REQUIREMNT, although encouraged, and a foundation licence does not require a science degree!
CVRS have a long history of training young people how to operate successfully - we believe the youngest to obtain a licence was 8 years old.
