About our club

Background

The inaugural meeting of the P&DARS was held in August 1984 in the Queens Hotel Porthmadog, with forty two radio amateurs in attendance, the first Chairman was Pat Allely GW3 KJW, Secretary Lorna Jones GW4 WKQ and Treasurer Pat Vernalls GW6 IMS. At first meetings were held in various hosteleries until the late Ralph Taylor GW2 HCJ, was able to arrange with the Ffestiniog Railway for use of their Porthmadog Harbour Station Restaurant in which to hold the monthly meetings.

Meetings continued to be held at the Ffestiniog Railway until 1997 when the move was made to the Madoc Yacht Club just across the Harbour from the Ffestiniog Railway.

With two of our members registered as an instructor for the Foundation and Intermediate Radio courses, we are able to assist prospective amateur radio operators to obtain their licence.
So far to date over a half a dozen people have been trained for the foundation licence, all who have passed first time.

Some of our members are also members of the South Gwynedd RAYNET Group, of which more info can be obtained from the group's web site of www.radioclubs.net/southgwyn

We also have a reciprical arrangement with the Meirion Amateur Radio Society web site www.radioclubs.net/meirion whereby their members may attend our monthly meetings without becomings members of the P&DARS.
