My home, Chandlers Ford is halfway between the port city of Southampton and the historic city of Winchester on the south coast of England. I'm lucky, my local Itchen Valley Amateur Radio Club is only just a mile or so away and along with my OM Brian (G0UKB) and another licensed couple we form the mainstay of the club's special event team. As such we have organised many special events for the club members at fascinating locations such as a local windmill, local schools and hobbies fairs, muddy scout and guide camps, our local hands-on science exploratory etc., as well as HF and VHF field day contests. The club is not into cut-throat contesting so contests are serious but social events. Since being licensed in 1995 I've been able to combine amateur radio with my other passion, Girl Guiding and am currently the national Thinking Day on the Air coordinator for Girlguiding UK. My return from the VP8 Dxpedition will be straight into organising the 2009 Thinking Day on the Air event in mid-Feb. Our two daughters (both licensed amateurs themselves) are old enough to have left home so at last I have the freedom to follow my dream onto a Dxpedition. I really am quite excited about this and would particularly like to thank the members of IVARC for encouragement and support. Baggage weight restrictions mean that I will travel light, with a Yaesu FT-857 all-band HF/VHF rig, Heil headset and one of these new tiny laptops (Asus Eee, Acer One, MSI Wind etc.) - we have yet to select this and thanks to Vic Bryant for offering to buy this for IVARC and my use during the Dxpedition.
