July 2009 edition
Only a couple of club meetings till our Summer break but one is the annual ‘Junk Sale’ – so clear your cupboards and bring your wallet for a ‘fun’ night where bargains and mirth abound.

N.B. we are looking for suitable club night topics - if any Club member wishes a topic to be covered in a Club Talk or suggestion for an activity, please discuss with one of the committee members and we will see if we can arrange it.

Club News
Much progress has been made on our next event station in September. The Club will be operating for ‘Railways on the Air’ from Darlington Railway Museum in North Road. Ian M3XNM has made a good contact with the museum curator who is ‘keen’ for us to put the site on air. A small group of members met there to recce the location and decide on operating and antenna locations. The call sign GB0DSR has been applied for.
A sked was arranged on Saturday 20th June with Duncan G0VIW who was on holiday in Australia. Using GB3IR, a contact was made with his ‘local’ repeater VK6RLM, in Lesmurdie [Node no. 57801]. Whilst calling Duncan, Tony G3MAE had a contact with a fellow ex-Steelworker in Whyalla, Western Australia – Dave VK5HDP.
Anyone around at 0900 or 1500BST should look out for the Club President Brian – G3KJX - who will be looking for CW contacts - try 10.116Mhz and 14.060Mhz

Club 2m Net (s)
The club net operates each Tuesday at 7.30pm clock time with call-in on GB3HG [145.625 FM].
There are still members keen to try some 2m SSB, anyone for a sked ?

Club Meeting Reports
The club have had operating nights on March 18th, April 15th, June the 10th and 24th. All these were using HF PSK and contacts have been sparse. This could be due to lack of enthusiasm when it comes to erecting the club masts and antenna ! It is hoped that fine weather on July 8th will rectify this.
2 good evenings were had on May 6th and 20th watching a DVD about Britain’s Secret Radio Operations . Showing how and why Bletchley Park was developed and its vital role in shortening WWII.
On 1st April we had a magazine night at the club. Whether we have another will depend on feedback – what do you think ?

Not so local – listen out for GB1SS [1-20 July] and VE3MOON [14-27 July], both stations celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Man landing on the Moon.

Club 25th Anniversary
Ideas and activities for our anniversary are not having much success to date. The meal ran into difficulties deciding a suitable date but we can still manage one before the year end. How about Christmas ?
The club has had operating nights but contacts have been at a premium – trust our anniversary to coincide with low conditions. We still have some club nights to come so lets keep trying.

Finale
Fact or fiction ? – Ronnie Hazlehurst wrote the theme music to the comedy series –‘Some Mothers Do Have Them’ . You know the one – starring Frank Spencer – ‘Ooo Betty’.
For a laugh, he worked morse code into the score which spells out the title - di di did dah dah dah dah dah dit etc sing it through , you will see what I mean. Now put the gaps in the right place and you have the title.
To test the theory, BBC 6 Music checked out the first few bars and it’s use of Morse code to link the notes to their corresponding letters of the alphabet.
RESULT -
Its FACT - the opening bars spell the title, minus the apostrophes and the opening melody played out by the piccolos, spells the title (minus the apostrophes).
